AOTW: Telepathy

Okay, guys. Here’s your article for today.

And there you go! Have a week!

…What? That one didn’t beam directly into your brain? Sonuva… thought I had mastered this Ability. Guess we’ve got to do this the old-fashioned way. Stupid helmet wasn’t worth half of the $80 I paid that old man.

And all I wanted in the first place was for him to donate the Youth Coast Guard Auxilary.

Muddled Back to the Future references aside, this is Ability of the Week: Telepathy!

Our topic this week is a newer Ability from Pokémon Black and White Versions, and a particularly rascally one to acquire at that. Telepathy is found primarily on pokémon obtained in the Dream World, but may also be found naturally on Elgyem, Beheeyem, and the special Musharna that makes appearances in the Dreamyard on Fridays. Apart from that, you’re gonna have to catch some “Z”s if you want to snag Telepathy on the likes of Wobbuffet, Gadevoir, Medicham, and a little group called the Sinnoh Creation Trio.

The effect of telepathy is to make you into an iconic comic book character that will exist for generations as you educate adolescent mutants about their newly discovered powers whilst struggling against a group of renegades hellbent on misusing their abilities to unmake society all in fashionable jumpsuits adorned with “X”s. Or talk to fish. Orrrr being that one guy on Heroes.

But seriously. Parkman was the best character on that show. …At first, anyway.

Okay, I see Steve getting the stick he gets out when I use too much referential humor. Better get back on point. The effect on the ABILITY Telepathy in Pokémon is found in double and triple battles. A pokémon with Telepathy is immune to taking damage from any move used by another pokémon in your party. Or, to put it in its simplest terms, Telepathy turns off “friendly fire” for the pokémon that has it. Which can be pretty handy! For example, Earthquake is one of many people’s favorite move in Pokémon, myself included, but the catch is it hits EVERYTHING on the field, and unless you were rocking a teammate with Levitate, the doubles partner is taking damage. The pokémon with Telepathy sees the move coming and dodges it, taking no damage.

To stop from going on and on about this, let’s just consider the pokémon you can snag outside of Dream World: the special Musharna, and Beheeyem. The Doctor Who fan in me is crying for the Dalek-inspired monster to get the nod, but if we’re going to play to strengths, we have to give props to the much bulkier Musharna. Have the flower power piggy bank build defenses for your side while its teammate goes to work on the opponents with Earthquake, Scald, Discharge, Sludge Wave, and so on without fear of damaging its partner.

That about takes care of it, Abiliteers! I’ll see you next time, and remember…
