AOTW: Download
Wil Brendel January 17, 2013AOTW: Download,
Abiliteers, we’re nerds. You know it. I know it. Maybe you identify with the Super Nerd trainer class, and maybe you don’t, but just by virtue of the fact that you’re on this site, reading this article right now, I’m going to make a judgment call that if nothing else, you spend way too much time on the Internet. While we may share the social stigma associated with logging far more hours than what most people might consider “healthy” on the world wide web, at least we can take comfort in knowing the good that this series of tubes has birthed from microchipped loins: art communities, the ability to share music from performers the world over, and yes, even Pokémon. This week we’re discussing the Electric Soldier and its digital kin. This is Ability of the Week: Download!
Download is a useful little Ability, introduced to us in the generation four titles. The Porygon family are the primary users of Download, but Black Version 2 and White Version 2’s mighty mantis Genesect has also been granted the unique power. Upon entering a battle, the Pokémon with Download automatically scans its opponent, checking whether it is more susceptible to damage from physical or special attacks. After the foe’s weakness is discovered, Download will increase either the user’s Special Attack or Attack stat by one stage depending on which would be more advantageous to it.
Obviously, this makes Download the best friend of mixed attackers, but with such a limited pool of Pokémon using it, your options are pretty limited. The best candidate is obviously Genesect with high overall power and perfectly balanced offensive stats. However, if you’re someone like me who is fundamentally opposed to using Legendary Pokémon, that leaves Porygon-Z and its pre-evolutions as your only choices. Just, you know, keep the virus-laden one away from your important files. …And the original one away from your epilepsy.
Porygon-Z has a respectable base Attack of 80, but the Virtual Pokémon really shines with its 135 base Special Attack. Download will still serve to make Z’s physical attacks more presentable, but this Pokémon has an absolute buffet of Special moves to choose from, and the stats to back it up. The likes of Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, Psychic, and Dark Pulse make up Porygon-Z’s learn set. I’d also recommend a Lock-On/Zap Cannon combo, or perhaps a Last Resort or Giga Impact for a STAB’d physical Attack to make the most of when Download takes effect in favor of it.
That pretty much does it for Download, Abiliteers! Until next time, run your virus scans, back up your files, and get nostalgic for Strong Bad E-Mails. Later, trainers!

>Insert rant about Pikachu being the real cause of those epilepsy-triggering scenes and how Porygon+ really need appearances in the animé again<
Your prose is as poetic (pun-etic?) as always, Mr. Brendal.

This reminds me, I should get a Porygon because of it’s Sp. Attack. Hmm… Good article by the way.
