You’re All Wet
williamgu January 15, 2013You're All Wet, So we’ve all gotten a look at the new starters for Generation VI of Pokémon – Froakie, Fennekin, and Chespin. As we prepare for this new generation to arrive, let’s take a look back at starters past. Particularly the Water-types.
First there was Squirtle. As I have covered before – not my favorite. I know the dude has super fans out there and his current TCG card is a thorn in the side of Darkrai, but still – it’s your Mac and Cheese.
Second gen had Totodile, a Water-type that I actually love. Well, I love him in the cartoon, not really so much in the game.
Next in line was Mudkip. Here was my chance to give Water-types a try. Was he my lucky charm? Not quite. Still don’t have Rayquaza. Plus he spawned an Internet meme that still bothers me.
Well, Piplup is actually a chill dude. I think mostly because he’s an Empoleon waiting to happen and also because I liked Dawn on the cartoon.
Currently, in fifth gen we have Oshawott. Irene has described him as “more sophisticated than Squirtle.” Vinnie spent over a year quietly resetting in the hope that he would get a shiny Oshawott (current status: he gave up). I have spoken many a diatribe against the moist and squishy otter but it’s Irene’s birthday this week, so she gets her PKMN of the Week.
So – Oshawott’s an otter. Honestly, not the kind of otter I see when I go out the first Friday of every month but it’s not like I’m going to the zoo either. Otters are cute little water weasels (notice how quickly everyone forgot our friends Buizel and Floatzel) that eat shellfish (clams and oysters). This is why Oshawott prizes his scalchop so much. Here is an otter being cute:
and here is a cute otter:
Oshawott is clearly of the former type.
Oshawott’s base stats are proportional to its fully evolved form – Samurott. The edge is to Special Attack at 63 and then Attack at 55 (always eight points apart through all evolutions). HP is at 55 and the rest (Defense, Special Defense, and Speed) are all at 45. Since I gave all the detail when describing Samurott, I’ll abbreviate and recommend building up Oshawott’s Special Attack through EV’s, IVs, and Nature (Modest). That way you can provide him with special Water-type attacks – Hydro Pump, Surf, and Water Pulse or Brine. X-Scissor will give you a hand up on Grass-types (even though it’s a physical move) or you can throw in Scald as one more special Water-type move.
Since Oshawott is not evolved, boost your Defense and Special Defense by having him hold an Eviolite.
One thing I will give Oshawott over all of the other Water-type starters – he’s a mammal. That means he’d be warm to snuggle up to even after a day of water play.

If only Oshawott was based on the second kind of otter
